It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock ‘n’ roll, baby, but on Friday, more than 1,100 of us were all access in-a-gadda-da-vida for The Mattress Factory’s Urban Garden Party , where co-chairs Rich and Cindy Engler took us straight up the charts with a backstage mystique-themed soiree that had us partying like rock stars. Welcome to the jungle, my little Fanflairs! Groupies followed the flashing bulbs of the paparazzi into a graffiti wonderland, where naughty nurse Megan Gavin greeted us with a shot of redemption that cleansed us of our workweek. Although, judging from the wide eyes and sideway glances, it was pretty obvious that most would have rather washed away their worries with the eye candy lounging in the hot tub. Speaking of eye candy, once the body brigade strutted out looking paintalicious wearing nothing but airbrushed art, we could have used a chiropractor to snap our whiplashed necks back into place. Never mind the clamor when the hors d’oeuvres were served from human body buffet girl Amanda Ruane.
Fully prepared to get our grooves on, we followed the beat of the exotic drums outside into the tents as they parted the Red Sea for her mini-majesty Michelle Liedke , making a royal entrance carried in on the biceps and six packs of an all-male entourage. “I refuse to spend another single day slaving behind a desk to make a living! I’m hiring a vocal coach tomorrow and buying myself a guitar,” laughed one wannabe. With a rebel yell, we cried more, more, more, until well after midnight as the Zafira Dance Company belly-danced their way across the stage, girls quenched our thirst with cocktails served out of the sunroof of a 30-foot-long limo, willowy models pouted their way down the catwalk, fire eaters swallowed more than just their pride, and Stephanie Babines of Oh My You’re Gorgeous turned the crowd upside down with a jaw-dropping display of pole acrobatics. Suffice to say, we quickly mastered the art of keeping one eye focused intently on the scenery and the other on one of 10 flat screens just in time to see the Penguins skate away with the Stanley Cup. Not a single one of us bothered to set the alarm on this mid-summer night’s dream; this was rock ‘n’ roll on steroids that went double platinum! Letting the good times roll during this $200K fête fatale were Christine Astorino, Franco, Dana and F. Dok Harris, Scott Bergstein, Colleen Daily, Michael White, Henry Simonds, William and Yaso Snyder, Clyde Jones, Nachum Golan and Steve Hough, Robin Fernandez, Harris Ferris, Gregory Patrick, Jackie Hucko, Tim McVay and David Bush, Richard Rauh, Karey Kluesner, Mitchell Schwartz, Bob Sendall, Clifford Benson, Pamela Bryan, Larry Konter, Barbara Mistick, Barbara Barry, Damian Soffer and Stacy Weiss and Will Carpenter. Also, Evan Schapira, Charlotte Kelly, Becky Jarold, Lindsey Smith, Larry and Jennifer Honig, Jim and Lauri Bly, William Spence, Bob Strauss, Betsy Wotherspoon, Bobbi and Mike Baker, Donna and Michael Babines, Rachel Heisler, Clifford Benson, Eric Cunningham, Jeffrey Inscho, artist Luca Paganico, Lara Patrinos, Michael Bentz, Topher Kinsella and Laura Leimkuchler . Art Attack Boy, does time fly! On Tuesday, an intimate group of artifiles gathered at 907 Penn to toast the 50th anniversary of the Three Rivers Arts Festival , which in Pittsburghese translates into the official start of our summer and, historically, also has translated into the official start of a downpour, a tradition that did not go unnoticed by Pittsburgh Cultural Trust prez Kevin McMahon. “Not having it rain on opening weekend• Now, that’s just amazing!” Not a black cloud was in sight as we enjoyed blasts from the past that included framed programs, pieces of paraphernalia and old newspaper articles on display from Festivals of yesteryear, although the ’70s hair and ’80s fashions seemed to provoke an embarrassed giggle or two. “Did none of us have mirrors?” laughed one gallerina. Outside, the pedi-cabs were ready and willing to ride us off into the sunset, although most opted for an early evening sun-on-our-shoulders stroll down the avenue, where the sounds of Robbie Klein and his Katz Plaza concert really put the spring in our step. Just another day in the greatest city in the world, shared with Festival Advisory Board chair Deb Acklin, Mernie Berger, Joe and Lynn Smith, Babs Widdoes, Marguerite Marks, Sally Hillman Childs, Kathleen Charochak, Estelle Coney, Lowrie Ebbert, Poosie Orr, Amanda Morel, Mary Navarro and Denis Vinski. Paw Prints We’re a city build on iron and steel, but on Saturday, more than 300 of us instantly melted after taking one look into the big brown puppy dog eyes that were amongst us during Paw Prints , the centennial celebration of the Animal Rescue League of Western PA held at P&W Foreign Cars. It’s always a sight to see the who’s who wearing what’s what, but this time, our pick of the litter went to Miss Piggie, a pit-bull terrier who looked hot to trot in her mutt couture, which included a frilly pink dress and matching paw corsage. “I tried to paint her nails, but I was only able to get four,” laughed her walker, Heather McKay . As Johnny & the Mustangs had us shaking our tails well into the evening, emcee Sally Wiggin kept us entertained with her behind-the-ice stories from a whirlwind visit to Detroit the night before. “I’m literally operating on two hours of sleep!” Throwing a bone to this $100K fur raiser were co-chairs Marla and John Zerrer, Heather Hurley and Mark Berger , ARL prexy Beverlynn Elliot t with Steve, Ginny Merchant, Robin Bernstein, Tom Litwiler, Joseph Vater, Donald Green, Dr. James Beebe, John Beering, Peg Fitchwell-Hill, Kevin and Donna Murcko, Susan Warner Gitomer and Ilene Ross.
