The new Dick’s Sporting Goods store at The Waterworks near Aspinwall is expected to open this summer.
The new store is located in the shopping center’s former Walmart anchor space.
It is unclear what that means for the Dick’s store at the Pittsburgh Mills mall — just nine miles away in Frazer.
Company officials said they had no information to provide on the Frazer store, but confirmed The Waterworks location will be a traditional floor plan, not a House of Sport.
“Our Ross Park location is a House of Sport, whereas The Waterworks location will be a 50,000-square-foot new store format,” Dick’s public relations team said in an email.
Dick’s House of Sport locations are larger and sell high-end gear. They also feature training facilities, such as rock climbing walls, batting cages and digital golf ranges.
Construction crews already have fenced off a portion of the parking lot while renovations are happening.
Mara Mrvos, a spokesperson for J.J. Gumberg Co., which owns the shopping center, could not provide information on the new store and referred questions to Dick’s.
Walmart operated in the plaza for nearly 20 years before closing in 2022 for what company officials called under-performing sales.
The storefront is one of the largest at The Waterworks, joining other anchors including Giant Eagle, T.J. Maxx and Dunham’s Sports.
