Chartiers Valley is prepared to hire a college assistant as its next football coach.

Steve Spence, an assistant coach at Washington & Jefferson, is the recommended candidate to be hired Tuesday, according to the Chartiers Valley school board agenda. Spence has served on the W&J coaching staff since 2010.

The school district in November decided to not retain previous coach Aaron Fitzpatrick, who went 8-22 in three seasons. The Colts finished 3-6 this past season and 1-4 in the Big Six Conference.

Spence is the assistant offensive coordinator at W&J under coach Mike Sirianni. Spence previously served as the team’s offensive coordinator and helped the Presidents win three consecutive PAC championships in 2012-14.

A Steubenville Central Catholic graduate, Spence played quarterback at John Carroll and later coached two seasons at his college alma mater.
