Following a 3-2 road loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, the Pittsburgh Penguins assigned forwards Emil Bemstrom and Vasily Ponomarev as well as goaltender Joel Blomqvist to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.
In a corresponding transaction, the team recalled goaltender Tristan Jarry from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
These transactions come as the team is entering a 13-day break for the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off tournament. In the cases of Bemstrom, Ponomarev and Blomqvist, they were sent to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in order to get playing and practice time during the break while the ramifications of Jarry’s return to the NHL roster won’t be determined immediately as the team will not play a game for nearly two weeks.
Jarry was assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after he cleared waivers on Jan. 16 following a stretch of poor play.
In 22 NHL games this season, Jarry has an 8-8-4 record, a 3.31 goals against average and an .884 save percentage.
At the AHL level, Jarry has appeared in nine contests and posted 6-3-0 record, a 2.11 goals against average, a .924 save percentage and one shutout. That shutout came on Friday in a 3-0 home win against the Bridgeport Islanders in which he made 31 saves.
Jarry, 29, is in the second year of a five-year contract with a salary cap hit of $5.375 million.
Blomqvist was the goaltender of record in Saturday’s loss to the Flyers, stopping 17 of 20 shots. In 11 NHL games this season, the rookie has a 3-8-0 record, a 3.54 goals-against average and an .896 save percentage.
With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the left-catching Blomqvist had appeared in 12 games and has a 6-4-2 record, a 2.93 GAA, .912 save percentage and one shutout.
The 23-year-old Blomqvist is in the second year of a three-year entry-level contract with a salary cap hit of $886,667.
Ponomarev, also a rookie, was recalled to the NHL roster Saturday afternoon and opened Saturday’s contest as center of the third line. Logging 9:16 of ice time on 13 shifts, the left-handed Ponomarev was 1 for 4 on faceoffs.
In total, Ponomarev has skated in four NHL contests this season and has no points while clocking an average of 9:13 of ice time per contest.
Primarily stationed with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, Ponomarev has appeared in 31 games this season and is that team’s fourth-leading scorer with 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists).
Ponomarev, 22, is in the final year of a three-year entry-level contract with a salary cap hit of $795,000.
The Penguins recalled the right-handed Bemstrom to the NHL roster on Friday. In two NHL games this season, he has no points while averaging 12:14 of ice time per contest.
An All-Star selection at the AHL level, Bemstrom is Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s leading scorer with 41 points (19 goals, 22 assists) in 37 games.
The 25-year-old Bemstrom is signed to a one-year contract worth $775,000, the league minimum.
The NHL Penguins do not resume play until a home contest against the rival Washington Capitals on Feb. 22.
