BRADENTON, Fla. – Newly acquired first baseman Spencer Horwitz will miss his first spring training with the Pittsburgh Pirates after undergoing wrist surgery.

Horwitz had a procedure performed on his right wrist last week by Dr. Thomas Graham to address chronic symptoms. Horwitz is expected to make a full recovery in six to eight weeks.

Horwitz, 27, was acquired from Cleveland on Dec. 10 in a trade that sent right-hander Luis Ortiz and a pair of minor league pitchers to the Guardians. The left-handed hitter batted .265/.357/.433 with 19 doubles, 12 home runs and 40 RBIs in 97 for the Toronto Blue Jays last season before being dealt to Cleveland on the same day the Pirates acquired him.

Pirates general manager Ben Cherington is expected to address Horwitz’s injury this morning at Pirate City.
