A man police say jumped from a moving vehicle was struck and killed along Route 28 in a multi-vehicle crash Tuesday morning. The incident shut down the northbound lanes of the highway during rush hour.

The crash near Etna was reported shortly before 7 a.m., according to Allegheny County Police. Authorities said it appears the man, who they did not identify, jumped from a vehicle and was then struck by another vehicle.

The man died at the scene.

Everyone involved in the incident remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

According to PennDOT’s statewide traffic alert system, 511pa, the roadway is closed between Exit 4 (Butler Street) and Exit 5 (Route 8). Traffic is backed up to the Veterans Bridge, Interstate 279 and I-579.

All traffic is exiting at the Etna exit, according to PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan.
