As anybody with a brain knew, Matthew Stafford will not be a Steeler.
A report says that the Steelers called the Los Angeles Rams about Stafford, but the quarterback had zero interest in coming to Pittsburgh. (Stafford decided to stay with the Rams.)
As Jarrett Bailey of The Sporting News said, “Don’t blame (Stafford). The shine of the Steelers has long been gone. A franchise stuck riding horseback when cars are on the road.”
The Steelers’ approach is neanderthal, especially on offense.
Their conceit is outdated, too.
As Ben Roethlisberger said, “You can’t just assume that everybody wants to come and play for the Steelers anymore like they used to.”
The Steelers haven’t yet decided on a quarterback.
There’s reportedly internal disagreement on who to retain, Russell Wilson or Justin Fields.
It doesn’t matter who wants who. Whether it’s owner Art Rooney prefers Wilson, or offensive coordinator Arthur Smith likes Fields, or whatever.
What matters is that the Steelers can’t make up their minds.
The Steelers were never going to do what’s necessary to bring in a prominent quarterback from outside the organization. Not unless one fell into their lap at the veteran minimum salary like Wilson did last year. It was always going to be Wilson or Fields.
They should have decided as soon as the season ended, then resolved the issue. Nothing has since changed that influences what they do. Nor will it.
Somebody needs to be in charge and make a decision. That should have long since happened.
By delaying, the organization reveals its disarray.
By delaying, the Steelers could lose both Wilson and Fields.
Fields would be crazy to stay.
Fields should go someplace that loads him up with run-pass options, lets him carry the ball, lets him be daring, lets him be Lamar Jackson Lite. Not a no-risk robot. Fields must make plays, not just avoid turnovers.
Fields is 25. He needs an opportunity, not merely a job. It’s time for his career to accelerate or die.
It would die in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers are not Fields’ best option. Not in an offseason where the quarterback pool is shallow, both in free agency and the draft. (The Steelers will lowball Fields financially.)
Legal tampering starts March 10, free agency begins March 12. If the Steelers haven’t signed Fields by then, he’s gone.
Now, with Stafford staying in Los Angeles, Wilson might be targeted by Las Vegas and Wilson’s former coach in Seattle, Pete Carroll.
What if the Steelers wind up with Kyle Allen as their starting quarterback?
That’s a doomsday scenario. It likely won’t happen. Interest in Wilson figures to be minimal. He’ll probably limp back to Pittsburgh.
But what are the Steelers waiting for? The franchise gets more haphazard by the day.
