This summer marks a historic milestone as the 2025 Shop ‘n Save Westmoreland International Airshow celebrates the 100th anniversary of airshows at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport, with excitement already building throughout the region.
What began as a small gathering in 1925, when the airport was known as Longview Flying Field, has grown into one of Westmoreland County’s most beloved traditions. That first airshow, organized by the airport’s first manager, Charlie Carroll, sparked a love of aviation that still soars today.
“Even though we’re now a highly technical operation, we’ve never lost that hometown feel,” says Gabe Monzo, executive director of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority. “We’re proud to host one of the biggest community events of the year, but at the end of the day, we’re still the kind of place where everyone gets treated like family.”
Throughout its rich history, the airshow has evolved from simple biplane exhibitions to a world-class event, drawing elite military demonstration teams, daring aerobatic stunt pilots, and aviation enthusiasts from across the region, including hometown pilots. Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of the event is that the airport remains fully operational throughout the show, balancing regular flights with high-flying excitement overhead.
“It’s pretty incredible,” Monzo says. “We’ll still be flying out commercial planes while jets are roaring above; that’s not something most places can pull off. But our team makes it happen because this airport operates like a big city airport, just on a smaller, friendlier scale.”
For those flying out of Latrobe during the event, parking is free, so travelers don’t have to worry about missing their flights — though they might want to pause and watch the aerial action before boarding.
Behind the scenes, hometown employees, many of whom grew up attending the airshows themselves, are hard at work to ensure this centennial celebration is memorable. Known for creating a culture of care and community, the airport staff is committed to providing both visitors and performers an unforgettable experience.
“This airshow isn’t just about planes,” Monzo emphasizes. “It’s about tradition, pride and bringing people together. Whether you’re here for the thrill of jet teams, the artistry of aerobatic pilots or just to share a day of wonder with your family, there’s truly something for everyone.”
As Westmoreland County looks back on 100 years since the first airshow, this year’s 2025 Shop ‘n Save Westmoreland International Airshow promises to honor the past while inspiring the next generation to look to the skies.
