Nina Midgley Kelman jokes that she took over My Favorite Sweet Shoppe in 2014 because of one of its products, Mountain Magic Bites.
“I joke that I bought the store so that I can have access to it,” she said. “It really is that good.”
Now, even more people will have access to the confection.
Mountain Magic Bites are taking to the shelves at Giant Eagle Market Districts across the Pittsburgh region.
“Getting into Market District, as a lifelong Pittsburgher, I don’t think there’s much else that tops that,” said Kelman, 36, of Crafton.
The popular item hit shelves in six Market Districts and three Giant Eagles – in Bridgeville, South Fayette and McMurray — in March, Kelman said.
“They are the number one seller in our store, across the board,” Kelman said. “It’s not a rice krispie treat, but it is a rice krispie-like treat.”
Kelman has been at the helm of My Favorite Sweet Shoppe for a little more than 10 years. The store has locations at 1597 Washington Pike in Collier and 237 East Main Street in Carnegie.
The store sells homemade fudge, gourmet candy apples, hand-dipped chocolates and gifts.
“In a nutshell, we are your local candy store,” she said.
Kelman connected with Giant Eagle representatives last summer during the Fancy Food Show in New York City. Giant Eagle put her in touch with Lawrenceville-based wholesaler Three Rivers Grown to work out the logistics of getting Magic Mountain Bites into area stores.
“Having a partner like them is invaluable,” Kelman said.
Kelman said Magic Mountain Bites have been well-received at Market District stores. They are sold in half-pound bags for $9.99.
While somewhat similar to a Rice Krispie Treat, the peanut butter and chocolate Magic Mountain Bites have a unique texture and are very light, Kelman said.
“My favorite thing to capture is people’s responses to trying it,” she said. “They say, ‘OK, I didn’t expect that.”
She plans a return to the Fancy Food Show this year and hopes to make more connections to continue the upward trajectory of her business.
“Having something like Giant Eagle on your resume, a lot more doors open,” she said.
