Entering the second night of the NFL Draft, team president Art Rooney II said the Pittsburgh Steelers remain in the market for a quarterback prospect, and he is optimistic 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers is going to join the organization.
Rodgers remains unsigned as he deals with personal issues. He visited with the Steelers in March but has kept a low profile since, excluding an interview last week on ESPN’s “Pat McAfee Show.”
“We’re still getting the same signals we have been getting recently that he does want to come here,” Rooney II said Friday night on Steelers Nation Radio. “I do think we may get word soon. Obviously, with things starting to crank up here with the offseason program, etc., if he is coming, we would like to get him here soon for some of that.”
The Steelers started their voluntary offseason conditioning program earlier this week. Organized team activities begin May 27.
After losing all three of their 2024 quarterbacks in free agency, the Steelers brought back veteran Mason Rudolph after a one-year absence. Skylar Thompson, signed to a reserve/futures deal in January, is the only other quarterback on the roster, and general manager Omar Khan said the team will take four quarterbacks to training camp in July.
The Steelers bypassed a quarterback Thursday in the first round of the draft, opting to select defensive lineman Derrick Harmon with the No. 21 pick. They do not have a second-round pick, which they traded to Seattle in exchange for wide receiver DK Metcalf, and were not scheduled to make another selection until the third round. They hold the No. 83 pick.
The Steelers also have four picks Saturday, one each in the fourth through seventh rounds.
After Cam Ward was selected by Tennessee with the No. 1 overall pick, no other quarterback was taken until the New York Giants traded back into the first round and took Jaxson Dart with the No. 25 selection. The New Orleans Saints took quarterback Tyler Shough early in the second round.
“We did not factor in whether Aaron is coming or not into that (decision),” Rooney said. “If we do draft a quarterback — and we still might — it’s probably not going to be somebody who is going to start for us this year. It’s going to be somebody who is developing and may play down the road.
“As far as I’m concerned, it’s not somebody who is going to have a big impact (this year) if we draft a quarterback.”
