PSO musicians to perform at library

Northland Public Library is hosting musicians from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra from 1 to 2 p.m. May 17.

The performance for all ages is part of the Musicians of the PSO Day of Music which strives to bring music into communities throughout the Pittsburgh region.

Several musicians will be on hand to share their talents on the violin, viola, cello, oboe and horn.

The performance will run about 45 minutes, followed by a question-and-answer session.

Book sale under way

The library is hosting its Spring Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 2 and 3. There will be a $5 bag sale from 1 to 4 p.m. May 4; bags will be provided by library staff.

Items available include all types of books, CDs, puzzles and games, DVDs and audiobooks on CD.

There will be something for everyone, and all proceeds benefit the library.

Programs for adults

Birds of North Park: 6 to 7 p.m. May 8

Join us in the Learning Garden for a presentation by local award-winning bird photographer Doris Dumrauf. From shorebirds, waterfowl and songbirds to ospreys, she will share photos and stories about the birds that make North Park their home. Registration is required.

Springtime Plant Swap: 9:30 to 11 a.m. May 10

Join us in the Learning Garden to meet fellow plant enthusiasts to trade plants/cuttings and knowledge. Arrive between 9:30 and 10 a.m. to drop off your plants or cuttings.The swap will start at 11 a.m. Bring up to five of your extra, propagated or no longer wanted healthy plants to share (houseplants and outdoor plants are OK), get your tickets and grab something new. Be sure to label your donations with the plant name and care instructions. Due to over supply in the past, no spider plants, please. And no invasive species.

Programs for young people

Middle School Writing Group: 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 7

This gathering held the first Wednesday of each month is for students in grades 5-8 who enjoy creative writing and would like to meet other students with similar interests. Join us for writing games, group writing exercises and interesting prompts. Bring your notebook or laptop because there will be plenty of unstructured time to start a new project or continue working on an old one, as well as opportunities to share your work, if you wish. No registration is required.

Nature Friends Storytime: 10 to 10:30 a.m. May 20

Children 3 to 5 are invited to join us for nature-themed stories, songs and library fun. No registration is required, but space is limited.

Pajama Storytime: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 28

For families with children in preschool through third grade. Pajamas are optional — but welcome — as we listen to stories, songs and action rhymes to get the wiggles out. A simple art activity will round out the evening.
