A 20-year-old Pirates fan who fell 21 feet from the Clemente Wall in right field of PNC Park during Wednesday’s win against the Chicago Cubs remained in critical condition Friday.

Friends and family of Kavan Markwood, who has ties to several Mon Valley towns including McKeesport and Liberty, didn’t respond to requests for comment and staff at the Pittsburgh hospital where he is being treated wouldn’t release further information.

“We’re not interested,” Shane Lawson told TribLive.

Lawson is Markwood’s maternal uncle. His paternal aunt, Juliette Och, also declined to comment or provide an update on Markwood’s condition.

Kavan’s sister, Taryn Markwood, said her brother was “doing awesome” in a public Facebook update shortly before noon Friday.

She also shared a verified GoFundMe that was set up to help with medical bills. It generated more than $5,000 toward a $10,000 goal as of Friday evening.

Prayers from people throughout the country, including from Walsh University in Canton, Ohio and Wheeling University in West Virginia, were shared on social media.

Markwood fell over the 3-foot-high railing and onto the warning track while celebrating Andrew McCutchen’s double that drove in the runs the team needed for a 4-3 win.

A 2020 South Allegheny graduate, Markwood also played linebacker for the Walsh and Wheeling Division II college football teams.

“Kavan is a valued member of our Cardinal Family. He played on the football team for the 2023 season after transferring from Walsh University,” said Wheeling sports information director Zack Zeigler. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Kavan, his family, friends, and all his loved ones. The Cardinal Family is praying for a full and speedy recovery.”

In 2023, Markwood was named to the Mountain East Conference’s Commissioner’s Honor Roll, appearing in five of the teams 11 games and logging four tackles. In 2022, he was listed on the Walsh (North Canton, Ohio) University football roster but it does not appear he saw playing time.

On Thursday, former South Allegheny football coach Frank Cortazzo praised Markwood, who was named first-team all-conference and team MVP as a senior for the Gladiators.

“Kavan is not only an outstanding athlete but an even more exceptional young man. His resilience, heart and strength are truly unmatched,” Cortazzo, now the head coach at East Allegheny, texted to TribLive.

His father Scott Markwood and mother, Angela Rachelle Lawson, both died young: Scott in 2014 at 37 and Angela in 2023 at 44.

Kavan Markwood lives in Lincoln, according to his Facebook page.
