Penn State emerged from spring drills looking to add depth at the linebacker position.

James Franklin’s program landed an athletic one in former North Carolina Tar Heel Amare Campbell, a 6-foot, 230-pounder who is coming off an impressive 2024 campaign.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported the transfer news Tuesday night.

Campbell finished second on North Carolina in tackles last season, producing 76. He racked up 10 1/2 tackles for loss, 6 1/2 sacks, five quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and two pass breakups.

Campbell visited State College earlier this month, according to an On3 report. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

The Lions recently lost linebacker Ta’Mere Robinson to USC via the transfer portal.

Penn State returns veterans Dom DeLuca and Tony Rojas at linebacker, but the Lions are replacing Kobe King, a second-team All-Big Ten choice in 2024.

Franklin was asked about Penn State’s linebacker depth, which includes young Lions Anthony Speca and Kari Jackson, following the Blue-White game on April 26 at Beaver Stadium.

“The young guys have taken some steps,” Franklin said. “Speca is doing some good things, probably had the most complete and consistent spring from a grade standpoint. Kari is super physical, and we obviously have DeLuca, you all know him and the type of player he is. Being able to get Rojas back (from injury) is going to be important as well.

“I think we’re in good shape, but there are some concerns as well since we lost someone we did not anticipate losing.”

Franklin added: “As you all know, we aren’t a big portal team, but we’re going to address some issues. If there is a linebacker out there that wants to be a part of our program and play for LBU, the most historic linebacker program in the history of college football, there’s an opportunity to join the room.

“I think we have enough in the room, but getting through a season with potential injuries could be challenging. We’re going to look in the portal soon and see if we can find a solution.”
