A Giant Eagle supermarket in Pittsburgh, near the shuttered Parkway Center Mall, is set to close.

The store is scheduled to close its doors on June 28 while the pharmacy at that location will end operations on May 21, according to company spokesman Dan Donovan.

“This was not an easy decision,” Donovan said in a prepared statement. “As we look forward, we faced the hard reality that we have no option to renew our existing lease at this site. When considered alongside the significant reinvestment needed into both the store and the surrounding development, we were challenged to envision a future for the store.”

The store’s 75 employees are to be offered jobs at nearby Giant Eagle locations.

Giant Eagle has other stores on Noblestown Road and in Crafton. The Parkway Center store opened in 1982.

Pittsburgh City Councilwoman Theresa Kail Smith told TribLive news partner WTAE she has spoken with one of the property owners, Curtis Kossman.

“He’s still very interested in moving forward with retail and a little bit of residential, and he has some… big names interested in the property,” she said.

Giant Eagle recently announced the pending closure of its store on Lincoln Highway in North Versailles, at the end of May, which it said was a “difficult, but necessary decision.”

The Parkway Center Mall shut down in 2013 with the closure of Kmart.
