A 59-year-old man accused of shooting his mother surrendered after an hours-long standoff with authorities in Unity Township Saturday.
The woman, who was shot in an arm, was being treated at a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, Trooper Cliff Greenfield, a state police spokesman, said. Her age was not available.
The incident began mid-to-late Saturday morning at a home in the 5000 block of Center Drive in the Lawson Heights neighborhood, where the man lives with his mother, Greenfield said.
What the man and his mother were arguing over was not immediately known and under investigation. After being shot in an arm, the woman fled to a neighbor’s home, Greenfield said.
Nobody else was inside the house, he said.
As state police began to establish a perimeter around the house, the man began firing several shots inside the home, none of which exited the building, Greenfield said.
“Out of extreme precaution, we asked neighbors to stay inside their homes out of concern for their safety,” he said.
While the man did not fire at police and police did not discharge their weapons, Greenfield said at one point a trooper believed he had briefly seen a rifle barrel protruding through a window.
“That was the extent of our observation of the gentleman inside the home,” Greenfield said.
Authorities were not able to establish communication with the man, Greenfield said.
As authorities began moving armored equipment into the yard, the man came out with his hands up and surrendered.
“We’re thankful that it is resolved. It was resolved peacefully,” Greenfield said.
The man will face aggravated assault and other charges, he said. State police received a search warrant for the home.
