South Fayette defensive end Anthony Charles committed Sunday to Minnesota, choosing the Golden Gophers over several other Big Ten options.
The 6-foot-5, 200-pound edge rusher will be a senior in the fall. He also listed Big Ten schools Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin among his 14 offers, along with West Virginia, Cincinnati and Syracuse.
Charles announced his commitment on social media after visiting Minnesota over the weekend.
He had 28 tackles, six sacks and two forced fumbles at South Fayette last season, his first with the Lions. He attended Bishop Canevin as a freshman and sophomore.
“He’s got a really good pass rush, a really good edge rush and speed off the ball,” South Fayette coach Marty Spieler said. “That’s what programs are looking for as a splash play difference-maker.”
Rivals.com rated Charles as a three-star recruit.
Minnesota went 8-5 overall and 5-4 in the Big Ten last year under coach P.J. Fleck, who’s entering his ninth season. The Gophers defeated Virginia Tech, 24-10, in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, N.C., in January.
Charles also listed offers from Akron, Buffalo, Miami (Ohio), Toledo, Sacramento State and Youngstown State.
Thank you to all the coaches that I’ve been blessed to learn from during this recruiting process. The genuine love and support you’ve shown throughout this recruiting process is something I’ll be forever grateful to have experienced.
