Two former WPIAL baseball players were selected Monday in the MLB Draft with one picked by his hometown team.
The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted 2022 Montour graduate Dylan Mathiesen, a right-handed pitcher at Liberty, while the Toronto Blue Jays chose 2021 Upper St. Clair grad Jake Casey, an outfielder at Kent State. Casey is the son of former MLB all-star Sean Casey.
The Pirates used a 13th-round pick on Mathiesen, a 5-foot-10 junior who pitched two seasons at Liberty after starting his career at Cal (Pa.). This spring he went 2-4 with a 5.07 ERA in 17 starts with 84 strikeouts in 65 2/3 innings.
As a high school senior, Mathiesen went 7-1 for Montour with 100 strikeouts in 70 innings.
Casey, a senior, was picked by the Blue Jays in the 15th round. The 6-2, 190-pound outfielder batted .356 with 17 home runs and 55 RBIs this past season.
