A day care and home in Derry Township were damaged in a fire Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were called to Wood Street at 10:54 a.m.

Two witnesses reported hearing an explosion before seeing flames climbing the side of a home. They spread to a daycare on the property. A sign at the scene identified it as Dornie & Lori’s House Day Care.

Witnesses said about 10 children were shuttled into a home across the street.

Neighbor Ronald Fetterman said firefighters saved his house. He heard an explosion and got his dog outside. Two cats were harder to corral but were safe in the basement.

“I ran out the front door and I saw flames underneath the porch over here,” he said.

Siding on his house was melted. As soon as firefighters got there they put water on his house to prevent the blaze from spreading.

“It was hot enough it busted the windows,” said his girlfriend Tina Ferry.

A section of Wood Street remained blocked off.

“The only thing I’m worried about is the kids, everything else can be replaced,” Ferry said.
