The Pittsburgh Steelers are adding some depth to their secondary amid an injury to safety DeShon Elliott.
The Steelers will sign former Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers, who was released by New England prior to the season. Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed the team’s intention to sign Peppers at his weekly news conference Tuesday.
“We’ll get him up to speed about what we’re asking him to do,” Tomlin said.
Elliott suffered a knee injury during the second quarter of the Steelers’ game against the Jets on Sunday and did not return. Chuck Clark filled in for Elliott the rest of the game.
Tomlin ruled out Elliott from playing Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, but he said it was too early to determine whether Elliott will be placed on injured reserve.
NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reported that Elliott is expected to miss a couple of weeks with an MCL sprain.
Peppers, 29, has started the past three seasons in New England after two years in Cleveland and three with the New York Giants. He was a first-round draft pick by the Browns in 2017 out of Michigan, where he was a two-time All-American and the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.
In 99 career games, he has 551 tackles, including 30 for a loss, as well as seven interceptions.
Tomlin noted that Peppers can play both safety positions as well as nickel corner in run situations. He also has contributed on special teams throughout his career whether on kick coverage or as a returner.
“He’s a football player first, positional player second,” Tomlin said. “He has displayed position flexibility over his career. … He’s just a good, well-rounded football player.”
Peppers also has encountered some off-field problems.
He missed seven games last season while on the commissioner’s exempt list after charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon were filed against him. A jury acquitted Peppers of the charges Jan. 24.
Linebacker Malik Harrison (knee) and defensive lineman Derrick Harmon (knee) also will not play against Seattle, according to Tomlin. Harmon did not play in the opener after injuring his knee in the preseason finale.
Tomlin hopes that outside linebacker Nick Herbig (hamstring) and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. (hamstring) can play Sunday. Herbig missed the season opener, and Porter was injured in the second half and did not return.
