The Pennsylvania State Police are investigating after two troopers were shot on Wednesday in southern Franklin County, according to a state police news release issued shortly before 8:30 p.m.

“During the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects was also shot. The Troopers were both transported to local hospitals. An update on their conditions will be provided later,” the release states.

State police are asking the public to avoid the area of the incident, which is southbound Interstate 81 at Exit 3 for Antrim Township.

“There is currently no threat to the public,” the release said.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, via 511Pa.com, earlier reported that there was police activity on southbound I-81 between Exit 5 for Greencastle/Waynesboro and Exit 3 for U.S. 11 and that all lanes are closed.

That area is a few miles north of the Maryland state line.

The start time for the incident was listed as 6:36 p.m. with the interstate expected to reopen around 2 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, according to the transportation department’s website shortly before 9 p.m.

A Chambersburg Public Opinion reporter in the area reported that U.S. 11 was blocked at the bridge over I-81 near Exit 3 around 8:30 p.m.

State police reported the scene remained active, the release states.

Further information about the incident and suspects will be released at a later time, state police said.
