A Hempfield woman was arraigned Monday morning on a homicide charge after state police said she fatally shot her husband.

Court documents filed by troopers said Leeann Steel, 51, called 911 on Saturday around 4:15 p.m. to seek medical attention for her husband after she shot him. Police said they found William Steel in a bedroom at the Merlin Lane home.

He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to officials. His age was not available.

Leeann Steel was found in a neighbor’s yard. A pistol found nearby appeared to have been recently fired, authorities said.

Steel reported during the 911 call that she fired the shot during an argument, according to court papers.

She was denied bail and is being held at the Westmoreland County Prison. An Oct. 30 preliminary hearing is set. She did not have an attorney listed in online court records.
