The Fox Chapel field hockey program has been knocking on the door of winning its sixth field hockey championship. The Foxes beat Latrobe, 2-0, in the semifinals to reach the WPIAL Class 2A final.
The Foxes had have another opportunity to do so against Peters Township. The championship match, on Oct. 29, was to be a rematch of last year’s title game, where the Indians won 3-0. Fox Chapel, which has five WPIAL championships in its history, last won the Class 3A crown in 2016.
The Foxes have reached the final in four of the past five seasons. Fox Chapel lost to Penn-Trafford in 2020, 2021 and 2023 in the final.
The Foxes ended the Warriors’ run of eight consecutive championships by toppling Penn-Trafford in the semifinals.
Vaughan named athlete of the week
Fox Chapel graduate Ethan Vaughan was recently picked as the Allegheny Mountain Conference Athlete of the week. The Lions’ freshman cross country runner hit a new personal best time at the Oberlin Regional Rumble.
Vaughan finished in 26 minutes, 39.5 seconds to place 47th overall.
McKee scores five times
Emily McKee, a Pitt commit, gave Fox Chapel girls soccer some notable moments during the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs. McKee scored five times to help Fox Chapel skate by Laurel Highlands.
The Foxes have played in the WPIAL finals during the past two seasons, winning the Class 4A title in 2023 and finishing as 3A runner-up last season.
Shady Side Academy tennis collects win at states
The Bulldogs (17-0) weren’t satisfied with just winning a WPIAL Class 3A crown. Shady Side Academy swept Hempfield (Landisville) during the first round of the PIAA tennis playoffs. Results from the quarterfinals were too late for this edition.
Friday settles in with Florida Gulf Coast
Fox Chapel grad Kate Friday, who played in the inaugural season with the Pittsburgh Riveters last summer, has worked on settling in with a new program after transferring from Xavier. Friday has handed out four assists and scored a goal during 16 appearances with Florida Gulf Coast.
The Eagles are 10-4-2 this season, including a 7-1-1 record in the Sun Belt Conference.
