Akiva Woods scored on a 70-yard run in the fourth quarter, followed by Marques Council Jr.’s 38-yard pass to Josh Lay, as No. 7 Aliquippa rallied to upset No. 2 Trinity, 21-14, in the WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals Friday night.
Jonah Williamson threw for one touchdown and ran for another for Trinity (6-5), which led 14-7 entering the final quarter.
Aliquippa (7-3) will face No. 3 New Castle in next Friday’s semifinals.
Here’s a look at other postseason matchups from Friday night:
Class 5A
Moon 48, Armstrong 21 — In the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs, Daiveon Taylor and Ryan Culligan scored two touchdowns each as No. 5 Moon (8-3) defeated No. 12 Armstrong (4-7). Moon will face Penn-Trafford in the quarterfinals.
Class 4A
New Castle 14, Montour 13 — Marino Graham threw for 141 yards and two touchdowns as No. 3 New Castle (9-2) defeated No. 6 Montour (7-4) in the WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals. Brandon Bennett ran for one Montour touchdown and threw to Zander Stern for the other. Montour failed on a two-point conversion attempt in the final minute. New Castle will play Aliquippa in the semifinals next Friday.
Class 2A
Apollo-Ridge 28, Riverside 7 — Jaden McCray scored four touchdowns on runs of 7, 9, 8 and 16 yards as No. 7 Apollo-Ridge, making its first playoff appearance since 2022, earned a quarterfinal date with No. 2 Western Beaver next Friday with a victory over No. 10 Riverside.
Apollo-Ridge’s first possession ended an interception at the 3-yard line, but when the Vikings got the ball back, they mounted a touchdown drive that gave them the lead for good. McCray took a direct snap and scored from 7 yards out and Beck Andree made the first of four extra points to make it 7-0.
Later in the second quarter, McCray dove on a bobbled Riverside shotgun snap at the 9-yard-line to get the ball back for Apollo-Ridge (8-3), then scored his second touchdown on the next play.
Riverside (5-6) cut the deficit to 14-7 on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Aidan Gaydosz to Hunter Garcia in the third quarter, but the Panthers got no closer and the Vikings put the game away with two more touchdown drives capped by McCray runs.
McCray ran eight times for 81 yards. Apollo-Ridge quarterback Alex Clawson carried 12 times for 130 yards and was 7 of 13 passing for 90 yards.
Mohawk 17, Our Lady of Sacred Heart 14 — Andrew Lloyd’s 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter lifted No. 8 Mohawk (6-5) over No. 9 Our Lady of Sacred Heart (5-6) in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs. Bobby Fadden threw for 140 yards and two touchdowns to Joe Nail and added 86 rushing yards for Mohawk. Nail caught four passes for 76 yards. J.J. Hayden threw for 128 yards and both OLSH touchdowns. Mohawk will play top seed Seton LaSalle next Friday in the quarterfinals.
Ellwood City 35, Keystone Oaks 13 — In the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs, Tyler Smiley threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 6 Ellwood City (7-4) past No. 11 Keystone Oaks (4-7). Dom Hogue caught 10 passes for 148 yards and DaiLonn Currie added 11 receptions for 102 yards with each catching a touchdown. Ellwood City outgained Keystone Oaks, 414 yards to 87 yards. Ellwood City will play Steel Valley in next week’s quarterfinals.
South Allegheny 61, Waynesburg Central 13 — Alijah Cook threw for 132 yards and three touchdowns as No. 4 South Allegheny (10-1) beat No. 13 Waynesburg Central (5-6) in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs. Joey Gamret rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns for South Allegheny, which led at halftime, 47-6. South Allegheny plays Washington in the quarterfinals next Friday.
Washington 37, Beaver Falls 7 — Tristan Reed threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as No. 5 Washington (9-2) defeated No. 12 Beaver Falls (4-7) in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs. Washington will face South Allegheny in next week’s quarterfinals.
Class A
Chartiers-Houston 26, South Side 21 — Dominic Andreolli ran for two touchdowns as No. 12 Chartiers-Houston (8-3) beat No. 5 South Side (8-3) in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs. Andrew Corfield rushed for two South Side touchdowns. Chartiers-Houston advances to play Laurel next Friday in the quarterfinals.
Fort Cherry 48, Avella 14 — Matt Sieg ran for 161 yards and two touchdowns as No. 1 Fort Cherry (11-0) downed No. 16 Avella (6-5) in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs. Eli Salvini added 95 rushing yards and three touchdowns for Fort Cherry, which plays Neshannock in the quarterfinals next week.
Frazier 27, California 12 — Brady Secrest threw for 118 yards and three touchdowns — all to Chase Fulmer — as No. 11 Frazier (7-4) upset No. 6 California (9-2) in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs. Fulmer caught four passes for 107 yards while teammate Derek Diamond rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown. Frazier matches up against Bishop Canevin next Friday in the quarterfinals.
Laurel 35, Jefferson-Morgan 0 — Luca Santini threw for 80 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a TD as No. 4 Laurel (10-1) blanked No. 13 Jefferson-Morgan (8-3) in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs. Kolton Carlson added 91 rushing yards and a touchdown for Laurel, which advances to play the Chartiers-Houston next week.
PIAA subregionals
Hollidaysburg 69, Allderdice 8 — Hollidaysburg (11-0) blanked Allderdice (4-6) in the PIAA Class 5A subregional.
Clearfield 14, University Prep 0 — At Brookville, Clearfield (8-3) shut out University Prep (7-3) in the PIAA Class 4A subregional.
Central Clarion 56, Perry 8 — In the PIAA Class 2A subregional at Brockway, Central Clarion (7-4) defeated Perry (1-8).
