Trey Susa is a 5-foot-9 golfer at Sewickley Academy who has an iron game to more than match his size.

A bit of irony was experienced by Susa at the WPIAL boys individual golf championships this season, as the Sewickley freshman tied for third in Class 2A.

“I was thrilled to learn that Trey was coming to Sewickley Academy as a freshman,” said Chuck Scally Jr., the Panthers’ golf coach. “As a young golfer, he has a great deal of experience playing tournament golf and playing outstanding golf. He exceeded all expectations this year as a freshman, but it did not surprise me.

“Trey plays and practices like someone who wants to get better every day. His strength is how he thinks on the course. His management skills are like someone you see on TV.”

Landing a spot on television may come soon for Susa.

“I am going to Augusta National the week before the (2026) Masters for the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals that will be on Golf Channel and NBC Sports,” Susa said.

Susa, whose home course is The Club at Nevillewood, proved to be one of the top young golfers in Western Pennsylvania this season.

The 15-year-old tied for third with Neshannock junior Rocco Bautti at the district finals as both golfers finished with a two-day total of 149.

Both Susa and Bautti shot rounds of 76-73 at Hill Crest Country Club in Lower Burrell (Sept. 22) and at Valley Brook Golf Course (Sept. 30) in McMurray.

Susa was a model of consistency in the championship round, connecting for 13 pars, two birdies and three bogeys.

“Heading into the WPIAL finals, I expected to do well because I know the Valley Brook Golf Course pretty well,” Susa said. “I was pretty happy with third, but I never go into an event expecting to not win.”

Susa proved to be the best freshman competitor in his division at the WPIAL tournament, finishing well ahead of South Park’s Austin Glowicki (83-76-159), Beaver’s Jordan Bello (82-85-167) and Neshannock’s Noah Gabriel (84-91-175).

Golf is the only sport for Susa; he has been playing it since he was a toddler at 14 months — 14 months! — old.

“I became interested in golf because of my dad,” he said. “I have been playing competitively since I was about 7.”

Getting back to his iron game, Susa has a great deal of confidence in his iron play when comparing it to other golfers his age.

“I consider my mid-irons to be the strength of my game,” he said.

The talented Sewickley freshman qualified for the PIAA tournament at Penn State where he tied for 29th in Class 2A.

“I expected to win going into the PIAA finals and the elements quickly humbled me,” Susa said. “I didn’t prepare well enough for 40 mph gusts and the cold. I am extremely disappointed in how I played, and I will be much more prepared next year.”

Susa bounced back from an 80 on Day 1 to shoot a 75 on Day 2 and finish with a final score of 155.

“Trey has a very good support system at home with his family and at Sewickley Academy,” Scally said. “My expectations for him next season are to maintain what he did this year, and he will do just fine.”
