The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled forward Joona Koppanen from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Thursday morning.
This transaction was made as the status of rookie forward Filip Hallander was not yet known, at least publicly. Hallander departed a practice session in Cranberry on Wednesday early and no update on his status was provided by coach Dan Muse.
Koppanen, 27, has appeared in six AHL games this season and has scored two points (one goal, one assist) while primarily operating as a middle-six center.
A left-handed shot, Koppanen is in his third season with the organization after initially joining as an unrestricted free agent during the 2023 offseason.
Last season, Koppanen appeared in 11 NHL contests and scored one goal (the first of his career) while logging an average 13:23 of ice time per contest.
In June, Koppanen re-signed with the Penguins, agreeing to a one-year, two-way contract extension with a salary cap hit of $775,000.
