The Quaker Valley boys soccer team strung together a 17-game unbeaten streak against WPIAL competition this season.
QV advanced to the PIAA tournament after finishing 16-1-1 against WPIAL opponents.
The Quakers were the Section 2-2A champions thanks to a 14-1-1 record. Avonworth finished as the section runner-up at 13-2-1 and wrapped up its season 17-4-1 overall.
Xander Vescio has been QV’s starting goalkeeper for most of the year. Behind Vercio’s exploits in front of the net, the Quakers surrendered just 11 regular-season goals and posted 10 shutouts.
QV allowed only nine goals in 16 section games, securing a 94-9 scoring advantage, and 17 goals in 22 games involving WPIAL teams. The Quakers held a 107-17 overall scoring advantage.
“I’m pleased with our performance. There is a lot we can improve upon, but we are getting better every day,” said Vescio, a senior. “Our expectations are the same every year. Take each game one at a time with the thought in the back of our minds for the final. We are excited to play some very solid competition and show what we can do.”
QV advanced to the PIAA playoffs as the district’s third-place team in Class 2A and was scheduled to meet Fairview on the road Nov. 4 in the PIAA first round.
The Quakers had a wild ride as the No. 2 seed in the WPIAL postseason, defeating No. 15 Highlands, 5-1, and No. 10 Shady Side Academy, 2-1, in double overtime in the first two rounds.
Finn Thompson scored the game-winning goal against Shady Side Academy. Patrick Connors and Sutton Hoehl also scored for the Quakers.
In the last nine years, QV and SSA have combined to win five WPIAL championships. The Quakers won gold in 2016, 2019 and 2021 while the Bulldogs own back-to-back district crowns in 2017 and 2018.
QV lost a tough 2-1 decision to No. 6 Deer Lakes in the semifinals before bouncing back with a 2-1 overtime victory against section rival and fourth-seed Avonworth in the third-place match.
The Quakers’ defensive corps this year has been propelled by seniors Asher Muretisch and Tanner Schultz, junior Will Meagher and sophomore Mike Semonik.
QV’s leading scorers included senior forwards Isaac Williams, Hoehl and Liam Miller with 49 goals between them in the regular season.
Williams netted 19 goals and seven assists, Hoehl accounted for 17 goals and 11 assists, and Miller added 13 goals and 17 assists. Hoehl played in only 10 games because of an injury.
Schultz also contributed eight goals and eight assists.
Deer Lakes edged No. 9 Beaver, 2-1, Oct. 29 in the WPIAL finals at Highmark Stadium.
