Multiple Pittsburgh communities are mourning the sudden loss of a ninth grade student at Imani Christian Academy.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office said Jaiquawn Jay, 14, of Penn Hills died Tuesday night.
According to the examiner’s report, Jaiquawn collapsed during basketball practice.
He was transported to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where he later died.
Imani Christian Academy made counselors and support staff available to students and staff in mourning, according to a statement posted on the school’s Facebook page Thursday afternoon.
“Jaiquawn was loved by his fellow students, his teammates, Imani staff and brought joy to his family,” the statement said in part. “During this difficult time we ask our Imani Christian Academy community to keep the Jay family in their thoughts and prayers and to support one another with kindness and care.”
The school called the loss of Jaiquawn “immeasurable.”
