Another close outcome didn’t go Robert Morris’ way Saturday night and the Colonials settled for a two-game split of their Horizon League season-opening road trip.
Milwaukee’s Seth Hubbard followed up on teammate Isaiah Dorceus’ desperation 3-point shot with a high-arcing tap-in just before the final buzzer to lift the Panthers to a 74-72 victory over the Colonials at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.
The result followed Robert Morris’ comeback 80-78 victory two days earlier at Green Bay and marked the Colonials’ fourth game decided by one or two points, where they’re 2-2.
“It’s a shame because we gave away a great opportunity here to get a second road win in the league,” Robert Morris coach Andy Toole said on the RMU postgame broadcast. “We were in control of the game to start the second half and just couldn’t sustain our effort.”
DeSean Goode’s layup with 9 seconds left pulled Robert Morris even at 72-72 before Milwaukee came away a winner on Hubbard’s buzzer-beating tap-in.
Aaron Franklin added 12 points and Dorceus finished with 11 for Milwaukee (4-5, 1-0), which overcame a 12-point second-half deficit.
Goode led Robert Morris (7-4, 1-1) with 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including 2 for 2 from 3-point range. He also contributed eight rebounds.
“He was just fantastic,” Toole said. “I just wish some guys would’ve been there with him. He was everywhere doing everything and he didn’t get a lot of help from his teammates, and that’s unfortunate tonight.”
Ta’Zir Smith added 12 points for Robert Morris. Josh Hill, who struggled from the field (2 for 10), grabbed 10 rebounds for the Colonials, who held a slim 38-36 edge on the glass.
Robert Morris erased a four-point deficit in the first half and outscored Milwaukee 13-0 during the final 3:40 to seize a 41-34 lead at the break.
A pair of free throws by Smith with 16:19 left gave Robert Morris a 51-39 lead — its largest of the game — but the Colonials went scoreless for the next 4½ minutes and clung to a 51-50 advantage.
A 7-0 Milwaukee run gave the Panthers a 65-58 lead with 6:50 to play, but Robert Morris clawed back to tie it on Goode’s bucket, setting up Milwaukee’s game-winning shot.
“Credit Milwaukee. They stayed with it,” Toole said. “We’ve got to get back to work and hopefully learn from this because we know all these games are going to be coming down the stretch like this. It just stings.”
The Colonials are idle until stepping back out of conference to face Toledo on Saturday afternoon at UPMC Events Center.
