Pittsburgh Penguins rookie goaltender Arturs Silovs is scheduled to start Saturday’s home game against the San Jose Sharks at PPG Paints Arena.
Coach Dan Muse announced Silovs’ status approximately two hours before the opening faceoff.
In 13 games this season, Silovs has a 4-4-5 record, a 2.98 goals-against average, an .897 save percentage and one shutout.
Silovs has never played the Sharks in his career.
Notes:
• New Penguins defenseman Brett Kulak and Stuart Skinner will not be available for the contest.
Both players were acquired in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers on Friday. Kulak and Skinner are each Canadian nationals, and as such, they have not yet been able to clear immigration procedures to join a United States-based team.
Muse was uncertain as to when that process might be finalized. In the meantime, the Penguins have given Kulak and Skinner a non-roster designation that removes them from the active roster.
In 31 games this season, the left-handed Kulak has recorded two assists while averaging 17:42 of ice time per contest.
Kulak joins the Penguins while in the midst of a streak of 295 consecutive games played. That is the ninth-longest active streak in the NHL.
According to a team spokesperson, Kulak’s streak will remain “active” in the view of the NHL as the league has determined he is out of the lineup for reasons beyond his control.
Skinner has played in 23 games this season and has posted an 11-8-4 record, a 2.83 goals-against average, an .891 save percentage and one shutout.
• With Skinner unavailable, rookie goaltender Sergei Murashov was recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton under emergency roster conditions.
• Penguins forward Rickard Rakell has been labeled as available for the lineup.
Activated from injured reserve Friday, Rakell has missed the past 20 games due to an ailing left hand that required surgery in October.
In nine games this season, Rakell has eight points (three goals, five assists) while averaging 17:44 of ice time per contest.
• Penguins defenseman Ryan Shea has played in 100 career games.
• Kulak has 99 career assists.
• With the game scheduled to start shortly after 3 p.m., neither team held a morning skate.
• The Sharks are scheduled to start rookie goaltender Yaroslav Askarov. In 19 games this season, Aksarov has a 10-8-1 record, a 3.14 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage.
Askarov has played the Penguins once in his career, earlier this calendar year. During a 2-1 home win for the Sharks on Jan. 27, Askarov made 29 saves on 30 shots.
• Sharks defenseman Dmitry Orlov has played in 899 career games.
• Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro has 98 career points.
• The Sharks have designated former Penguins defenseman Vincent Desharnais to injured reserve due to an undisclosed injury.
• The scheduled referees are Francis Charron (No. 6) and Carter Sandlak (No. 66), while the linesmen are Kyle Flemington (No. 55) and Sean Oliver (No. 66).
