A winter storm warning with total expected snowfall of 6 inches or more remains in effect through 1 p.m. Sunday for much of the region.

The National Weather Service Pittsburgh office reported at 8 a.m. Sunday 7.8 inches of snow in Unity Township, 6.5 inches in Pittsburgh’s North Side and 5.3 inches in New Kensington.

PennDOT lifted reduced speed limits and vehicle restrictions on major roadways in the region Sunday morning as snow continued to fall as part of a major storm moving through the area.

Also Tier I restrictions that prohibited motorcycles, RVs and some empty commercial trucks were lifted on I-279, I-579 and portions of I-79 and I-376.

A 45 mph speed limit had been in force on interstates in Allegheny, Beaver, Greene, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland counties — including Interstate 70 and Interstate 79 — and on Route 28 in the region because of the storm.

PennDOT officials said plows would continue to clear roads but recommended avoiding driving during the storm.
