There will be an increased police presence Monday at Rostraver Elementary School after officials at Belle Vernon Area School District reported apparent threats made against the school on social media.

In a Saturday letter addressed to the school community and posted on the district website, Superintendent Timothy Glasspool said the beefed-up police presence is planned out of an abundance of caution while Rostraver police investigate the reported threats.

“This measure is intended to provide reassurance and support while the investigation continues and to help maintain a safe and secure learning environment for all,” he wrote.

Rostraver police Chief Scott Sokol wasn’t available for comment on Sunday.

Glasspool said the district became aware of the threats when it received multiple reports about them through Safe2Say Something. That state program accepts anonymous tips and is meant to help prevent youth violence.

Glasspool didn’t describe the substance of the threats.

“The threats were made on a social media platform and/or large group chat after the school day,” he said. “Please be assured that the district takes all reports of this nature very seriously.”

Glasspool urged parents to review their child’s online presence and use of social media and to remind children to notify a trusted adult if they see or hear something concerning.
