The South Fayette girls basketball program has been a dominant force this decade.
The Lions won three consecutive WPIAL championships between 2022-24. Then after having that title streak end in the district finals, they went out last season and won a PIAA championship.
So it’s no surprise South Fayette is off to a perfect 5-0 start with a Section 3-5A win over Mars and nonsection victories over Greensburg Central Catholic, North Allegheny, Pine-Richland and Mt. Lebanon.
However, the fact their opponent on Monday is also undefeated may raise an eyebrow or two.
West Allegheny finished in fifth place in the section last season and missed the playoffs with a final record of 11-11.
But the Indians won by 23 points in their section opener last week over Chartiers Valley, which followed triumphs over Hopewell, Lincoln Park and St. Joseph in nonsection play.
West Allegheny has a chance to prove it is a legit contender in the section when it hosts South Fayette at 7:30 p.m.
Eye of the Tigers
There is a similar matchup of undefeated girls basketball teams in Class 3A between a team that is a traditional power and one trying to build something special.
A year ago, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart was perfect in winning Section 1-3A, finishing four games ahead of runner-up Quaker Valley.
This year the Chargers are 4-0 win nonsection wins over Beaver, Lincoln Park and Serra Catholic, and then a section- opening, 43-point victory over Ellwood City.
Beaver Falls, which finished five games behind OLSH in the standings in 2024-25, also is off to a 4-0 start.
The Tigers defeated Rochester, Ambridge and Hopewell in nonsection tune-ups, and then edged Quaker Valley, 52-48, in their section opener last week.
OLSH hosts Beaver Falls on Monday in a game you can watch on Trib HSSN at 7:30 p.m.
A year ago, the Chargers swept the Tigers, winning by 14 points at BF and by 33 points at OLSH.
Boys hoops showdown
While most WPIAL boys basketball teams will hit the court for section action Tuesday and Friday, two teams off to good starts in Section 1-6A will claim the spotlight on Monday.
Top-ranked New Castle looks to remain undefeated when it hosts Woodland Hills at 7:30 p.m. in a game you can listen to on Trib HSSN.
The Red Hurricanes were double-digit winners over Bishop Canevin, the Kiski School, Knoch and Montour before opening up section play last week with a 35-point triumph at North Hills.
The Wolverines also won their section opener at home over Pine-Richland, 45-37.
Woody High is 4-1 with after beating Carrick, Steel Valley, Penn Hills and Pine-Richland with a loss to City League power Allderdice sandwiched in between.
