The letter-writer who wrote “Killing survivors a sign of our moral collapse” (Dec. 7, TribLive) is correct, but where was he for the past 30 years? There were only two boat survivors killed in this recent incident, but in 2003 we illegally invaded Iraq under the false pretense they possessed weapons of mass destruction to start our endless war on terror, murdering an estimated 200,000 to 1 million innocent Iraqis. And later President George W. Bush made jokes about his futile search for the nonexistent WMDs.
The government tortured people at Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere for at least seven years during this time. Torture is the definitive sign of moral collapse. There is a special place in hell for all torturers. The Obama administration killed hundreds of innocent civilians with drone strikes. And President Obama also joked about using “predator drones” during a White House event. This callous humor displayed by presidents shows depravity knows no bounds.
I believe America is blessed by God, that our Constitution and Bill of Rights are unequaled and even divinely inspired. But we have gone astray. We’ve had a corrupt government controlled by the “military-industrial complex” for decades. Our moral collapse started a long time ago. It’s just metastasized to its final stage.
