Nick Herbig will not be in uniform for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ game at the Detroit Lions on Sunday, the team announced Saturday. One of the Steelers’ top three outside linebackers, Herbig suffered a hamstring during their most recent game Monday.
With T.J. Watt also out because of his partially collapsed lung, the Steelers’ depth chart at outside linebacker is down to starter Alex Highsmith, rookie Jack Sawyer and Jeremiah Moon — the latter of whom was signed this week off the practice squad of the Carolina Panthers.
In another Steelers injury status change announced Saturday, long snapper Christian Kuntz had his questionable designation removed and he will play in Detroit. Kuntz suffered a knee injury this week, and it was enough of a concern that the Steelers signed Pitt alum Cal Adomitis to their practice squad as insurance on Friday.
Also Saturday, the Steelers announced that offensive lineman Jack Driscoll and cornerback Daryl Porter were elevated from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s game.
A six-year veteran who joined the organization in October, Driscoll was also a call-up for Monday’s win against the Miami Dolphins but he did not get in the game. Porter is an undrafted rookie who will be in uniform for a regular-season NFL game for the first time.
Porter, who spent his first two college seasons at West Virginia, joined the Steelers two weeks into training camp.
Driscoll and Porter were called upon in part because of attrition at their respective positions. Cornerback James Pierre (calf) and starting left guard Isaac Seumalo (triceps) have been ruled out for Sunday’s game.
