There seems to be a perception these days that civility and genuine acts of kindness are rare occurrences. I emphatically disagree, and here’s why.
I head Project SEED, a backpack program that provides weekend food for any child in the New Kensington- Arnold School District who is experiencing food insecurity.
Every September I send a letter to previous donors outlining how we used their donation to feed hungry kids and setting our goal for the new year. And then it happens!
Many individuals, clubs, organizations and businesses from the A-K Valley and beyond respond in unbelievable ways. This year, we exceeded our $40,000 goal in only 12 weeks.
Then we gather an amazing group of volunteers whose dedication is on full display every week. Add to that the senior citizen center that houses our program, the public works employees who help with delivery and the school district staff who ensure that the kids receive their “SEED bags” every week, then sprinkle in friends, family, former students and our board of directors who do so much to make this program work.
All these people show compassion by investing in the youth of our community. The kids see total strangers showing them acts of kindness every week so they can succeed.
Project SEED supporters, I hope you realize that you are a part of a very special program that is making a difference for lots of kids (over 400 per week this year).
On behalf of those kids, I thank you! The smiles on their faces on “Food Friday” are their gifts to you. Merry Christmas!
