There is a Pennsylvania National Guard unit located at 372 Donohue Road east of Greensburg. At the entrance is a large wooden sign simply stating, “BATTLE OF BULGE MEMORIAL CHAPTER 14.” Below it is a red insignia shaped as a keystone with the words “Co D 1/110TH INF.” This memorial is dedicated to the local men who served with the 28th Infantry Division (“Keystone”) during the Battle of the Bulge, 81 years ago.
During World War II, this unit was given the nickname the “Bloody Bucket” division by German forces due to the shape and color of its red keystone insignia. This particular local unit, the 110th Regiment, took the full brunt of the German attack. They took heavy casualties but managed to hold off the enemy until reinforcements arrived. My dad was there as an Army medic who helped tend to the wounded.
Please remember the brave soldiers who fought the bitter cold and made tremendous sacrifices for our country. And maybe think about them as you drive past this memorial.
