A Hempfield woman is charged with aggravated assault and child endangerment after state police said she stabbed a man during an argument on Christmas.

Mia L. Riser, 26, was involved in a dispute with a man at a Hempfield apartment shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to a criminal affidavit. The man told police that during the confrontation, Riser attempted to jump out of an elevated window while holding a baby in one arm and a steak knife in her other hand, according to court papers.

The man, identified in court records only by his last name, told troopers he talked Riser back into the apartment and moved the child to safety. Riser then left the West Hills Drive residence and began walking toward Route 30.

Troopers from the Greensburg barracks arrived at the scene after the man called for help. They found him on the ground restraining Riser. According to the police report, the man had a 1-inch stab wound to his stomach.

He told officers he had placed the child in his car and gone to look for Riser. When he found her, a second struggle ensued and Riser stabbed him with the steak knife, police said.

Riser is charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and two counts each of reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct.

She is being held in the Westmoreland County Prison after failing to post $100,000 bail. Court records do not list an attorney for Riser.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 6 before District Judge Mark Mansour.
