Highlands Family Center in Tarentum is getting some much-needed help to address a surge in food needs in the wake of the federal government shutdown and state budget stalemate late last year.
The organization, run by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, was awarded $5,000 from The United Way and Heinz Endowments.
The money will be used to bump up the inventory of pantry staples, produce and kid-friendly options and respond to the increased need caused by the recent lapse in SNAP benefits, officials said.
The East Fourth Avenue facility serves about 700 families in Tarentum, Brackenridge, Harrison, Fawn and surrounding communities.
It’s a one-stop shop for children and adults, providing services that include a diaper bank, food pantry, financial counseling, story times and employment assistance.
They hold routine food drives, hosted in partnership with 412 Food Rescue, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and other groups.
