We have a rare boys basketball midweek showdown in Class 5A between two programs that have a combined four district titles this decade and who are tied for seventh place on the all-time WPIAL championship list with seven crowns each.

A light night of scholastic hoops is highlighted by a battle for first place in Section 4-5A when defending champion Chartiers Valley travels to Midland to face Lincoln Park at 7:30 p.m.

The Colts are 3-0 in the section and 9-1 overall with seven consecutive victories since suffering their lone loss of the campaign against Fox Chapel on Dec. 6.

The Leopards are also perfect in section play at 2-0 with a 6-2 overall record.

Lincoln Park has yet to lose to a WPIAL team with both losses coming to schools from Florida and Ohio.

The Leopards are No. 1 and the Colts are No. 2 in the section in scoring, averaging 68.2 and 67 points per game respectively; however, CV is also No. 2 in defense, allowing only 44.9 points per game.

Chartiers Valley won WPIAL Class 5A gold in 2025 and Lincoln Park claimed Class 4A district championships in 2021, 2023 and 2024.

Avoiding defeat on the mats

While some WPIAL sections finally begin section duals Wednesday, there are four sections with first place up for grabs in Class 3A.

• In Section 2-3A, Canon-McMillan is home to Waynesburg Central. The Big Macs sit at 2-0 atop the section while the Raiders are even in the loss column with Trinity at 1-0.

• In Section 3-3A, Baldwin visits Mt. Lebanon. The Highlanders are 2-0 in section matches and the Blue Devils are 1-0.

• In Section 7-3A, Thomas Jefferson heads to Monongahela to battle Ringgold. The Jaguars are 2-0 in the section, a half-game ahead of the Rams at 1-0.

• In Section 9-3A, Norwin is 2-0 while both Penn-Trafford and Franklin Regional are 1-0. On Wednesday, the Knights host the Warriors.

A-K Valley fight

Four of the nine sections in WPIAL Class 2A wrestling begin Wednesday.

Of the other five, there is only one showdown of unbeaten section teams for first place.

That takes place when A-K Valley rivals collide as defending champion Burrell hosts Valley.

Both the Buccaneers and Vikings are 1-0 in Section 9-2A.

Dating to 2022, Burrell has won the last three matches against Valley by a combined score of 199-6.
