When the final buzzer sounded in overtime of a classic back-and-forth game, Duquesne found itself short of another road victory.
Jaiden Glover-Toscano scored 28 points, and Derek Simpson added 22 to lead Saint Joseph’s to a 97-90 victory on Wednesday night at Hagan Arena in Philadelphia, denying Duquesne its second consecutive Atlantic 10 road victory.
On Dec. 30, the Dukes (9-7, 1-2) outlasted Davidson in double overtime, 89-83, on the road.
This time, the Dukes weren’t so lucky.
“It just wasn’t good enough,” Duquesne coach Dru Joyce III said. “We fought, but sometimes we have to play with some intelligence, too. When you don’t take tendencies away from players, you’re going to struggle. When you allow guys to play to their strengths and they find opportunities in their comfort zone, they usually have success.
“Defensively, we just didn’t do a good job of taking away their strengths.”
It’s been a theme for Duquesne throughout the season. While the Dukes’ scoring offense (86.3 ppg.) ranks third in the A-10, their scoring defense (79.1 ppg.) is last.
Austin Williford added 16 points, Dasear Haskins scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Khaafiq Myers finished with 10 points for Saint Joseph’s (9-7, 1-2).
Tarence Guinyard paced Duquesne with 20 points. Alex Williams added 16, and David Dixon, Jimmie Williams and Jakub Necas scored 15 apiece for the Dukes, who struggled to shoot just 26.5% (9 for 34) from behind the 3-point arc.
Dixon led Duquesne with 12 rebounds.
The game featured 18 ties and 15 lead changes.
Glover-Toscano’s off-balance shot in the paint with 5 seconds left in regulation tied the score at 83-83 and sent the game into overtime after Duquesne couldn’t hold onto a three-point lead in the final 37 seconds.
“We had a chance to extend our lead,” Joyce said. “We fought back, and then we didn’t get a stop. They dribble drive. It was a tough make. But you have to try to keep guys out of the paint. Honestly, they probably got a paint touch almost every possession, every other possession in the last 15 minutes of the game, including overtime. They just went downhill and created opportunities, and we didn’t guard.”
After Dixon connected on just his second 3-point shot of the season to give Duquesne an 86-83 lead to start the overtime, Saint Joseph’s used a 12-0 run to build a 95-86 advantage and seal the outcome with 13 seconds remaining.
Williford’s 3-point shot tied the score at 86-86. His layup followed with 1:59 left and put Saint Joseph’s ahead for good.
Before the decisive run, neither team led by more than eight points. Saint Joseph’s was ahead 40-32 in the closing minute of the first half, which produced eight ties and nine lead changes.
A 10-4 run during the final 2:08 carried the Hawks to a 40-34 halftime lead.
Duquesne is idle until Tuesday night, when Dayton visits UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
“We have to go forward,” Joyce said. “We’ll go to practice and get ready to play our next game. You prepare and you get yourself set up to try to win.”
