Bushy Run history talk

Bushy Run Battlefield will host its next History Speaks talk at 1 p.m. Jan. 17 at its museum, 1253 Route 993 in Penn Township.

Hempfield Area middle school social studies teacher Michael Giorgianni will teach attendees about the onset of the French and Indian War and the life of George Washington.

Solar energy meeting

Penn Township-based environmental nonprofit Protect PT will host a discussion on solar energy in Southwestern Pennsylvania on Jan. 22.

The meeting will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. at Protect PT’s office in Penn Township, 3344 Route 130. It will be held in conjunction with Solar United Neighbors, a solar advocacy and education nonprofit.

Protect PT also will hold its annual member breakfast at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 24 in the Slovenian National Home, 3024 Church St. in Penn Township. The breakfast will be accompanied by a review of the nonprofit’s 2025 efforts.

Lions fundraiser

The Level Green Lions Club will host a murder mystery dinner on Jan. 24 at the Level Green Community Building, 123 Murrysville Road in Penn Township.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. A chicken Parmesan dinner is slated for 6 p.m. The murder mystery, titled “Mobsters, Molls and Marinara,” will follow. For tickets, call 412-804-1866 or email levelgreenlionsclub@gmail.com.

Library events

Penn Area Library in Penn Township will hold a puzzle sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 24.

The library also will host a program for those 55 years and older to learn about cybersecurity and online library resources. These sessions will be held 1 to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 19 and 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 26.

The first session will teach attendees how to protect themselves from credit card abuse, identity theft, malware, viruses, hackers, spam and phishing. The second session will teach visitors how to download e-books and audio books through the library.

Galentine’s show

The Community Women’s Club of Level Green will host a Galentine’s vendor show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Level Green Fire Hall, 536 Route 130 in Penn Township.

Sportsman’s Bash

The Level Green Volunteer Fire Department will host a Sportsman’s Bash at the fire hall social hall, 536 Route 130, from noon to 5 p.m. Feb. 8.

Doors open at noon and drawings for raffles will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is $30 and includes food, drinks and two numbers for the drawings. All proceeds will benefit the fire department.

Tickets can be purchased through the firefighters or by visiting the fire department’s social club in the evening.

America250PA offering scholarships

To mark America’s 250th anniversary and to honor the legacy of Pennsylvania’s strong commitment to education, America250PA will award $250,000 in scholarships — 25 scholarships worth $10,000 each — to deserving Pennsylvania high school seniors who plan to attend an accredited Pennsylvania college or university in the 2026-27 school year.

The Semiquincentennial Scholarship Program will distribute the scholarships across America250PA’s six regions.

There will be up to 12 awards for community college students and up to 13 awards for students attending four-year institutions.

Applications are due Jan. 31.

Heating assistance program enrollment

The federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, has opened enrollment for the season, offering one-time cash grants to qualifying applicants to help with home heating bills or emergency repairs.

Households can apply through April 10 or until the funds are depleted.

Journalism scholarship

The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania is accepting applications for its 20th annual Bob Fryer Memorial Scholarship ($5,000) and the club’s annual $2,500 scholarship for aspiring journalists.

Deadline for entries is Feb. 9. Winners will be awarded at the club’s annual Golden Quills Awards Dinner.

Tax-prep aides

The AARP Foundation is seeking volunteers to be trained for its tax aide program, the nation’s largest free volunteer-based tax preparation program.

Volunteers can be trained as tax return preparers or as client facilitators. Anyone interested in volunteering can call 724-374-3780.
