Sage’s Army bingo, free movie
Friends of Sage’s Army Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to helping those struggling with addiction and in recovery, will sponsor music bingo from 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 22 at 814 Lanes & Games, 4589 Route 136, Hempfield.
Midnight Haven Entertainment will provide the music. Admission is free, and bingo cards are $2 each. Proceeds will benefit the continued services and outreach of Sage’s Army.
The organization also will sponsor a movie night featuring “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” on Jan. 28 at the Sage’s Army Recovery Center, 6044 Lincoln Highway, Suite 400, Hempfield. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the movie will begin at 6 p.m. Popcorn, pizza, beverages and snacks will be available.

Irwin council elects leaders
Councilman Tyler Baum has been elected president of Irwin council, succeeding Councilman Rick Burdelski.
Councilman John Slivka was elected vice president and Burdelski was elected chairman pro-tem.
Councilman Shawn Stitely was appointed as Irwin’s representative to the Western Westmoreland Municipal Authority through Dec. 31. Stitely said he is permitted to serve even though he is an employee of the authority.
Dylan Mace was appointed to the same municipal authority board for a term ending Dec. 31, 2031.
History talk at Bushy Run
Bushy Run Battlefield will host its next History Speaks talk at 1 p.m. Jan. 17 at its museum, 1253 Route 993 in Penn Township.
Hempfield Area middle school social studies teacher Michael Giorgianni will teach attendees about the onset of the French and Indian War and the life of George Washington.

Solar energy meeting
Penn Township-based environmental nonprofit Protect PT will host a discussion on solar energy in Southwestern Pennsylvania on Jan. 22.
The meeting will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. at Protect PT’s office in Penn Township, 3344 Route 130. It will be held in conjunction with Solar United Neighbors, a solar advocacy and education nonprofit.

America250PA offering scholarships
To mark America’s 250th anniversary and to honor the legacy of Pennsylvania’s strong commitment to education, America250PA will award $250,000 in scholarships — 25 scholarships worth $10,000 each — to deserving Pennsylvania high school seniors who plan to attend an accredited Pennsylvania college or university in the 2026-27 school year.
The Semiquincentennial Scholarship Program will distribute the scholarships across America250PA’s six regions.
There will be up to 12 awards for community college students and up to 13 awards for students attending four-year institutions.
Applications are due Jan. 31.

Heating assistance program enrollment
The federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, has opened enrollment for the season, offering one-time cash grants to qualifying applicants to help with home heating bills or emergency repairs.
Households can apply through April 10 or until the funds are depleted.

Journalism scholarship
The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania is accepting applications for its 20th annual Bob Fryer Memorial Scholarship ($5,000) and the club’s annual $2,500 scholarship for aspiring journalists.

Deadline for entries is Feb. 9. Winners will be awarded at the club’s annual Golden Quills Awards Dinner.
AARP seeking tax-prep aides
The AARP Foundation is seeking volunteers to be trained for its tax aide program, the nation’s largest free volunteer-based tax preparation program.
