It is not unusual to see a few upsets during the first night of a two-day tournament.

But it is unusual to see two No. 1 seeds and a No. 2 seed fall.

That was the case Friday at the 73rd Westmoreland County Coaches’ Association tournament at Greensburg Salem High School.

Kiski Area sophomore Macoya Johnson, the eighth seed, used a late takedown to stun Norwin senior Luca Butera at 107 pounds.

Valley sophomore Juzef Betts used an escape and takedown in the third period for a 4-2 win against top seed Kiski Area sophomore Gavin Murphy at 133.

Kiski Area senior heavyweight Alex Akerley was awarded four stalling points in the final period to pull out a 8-5 win against Franklin Regional sophomore John Montgomery, the No. 2 seed.

Johnson celebrated after winning by pumping his first.

“I used my defense to fend him off,” Johnson said. “On the winning takedown, he shot and grabbed my leg and reached under and grabbed his leg and when we hit the mat I was in control.

“This was my biggest win of my high school career. It felt good. I tried to make him tired. I just went with the flow. I kept attacking his head.”

Johnson will now face No. 4 seed Jax Brentzel, a freshman from Penn-Trafford, in the semifinals beginning at noon.

Betts said he felt he was better than an eighth seed, so he just went out and wrestled.

“I missed a couple matches, so my record was not what I should have been,” Betts said. “So I just went out and wrestled hard and came out on top. I have to do the same on Saturday.”

Betts will face Derry freshman Cam Olson.

Akerley won two matches. He opened with a 1-0 win against Burrell junior Logan Shank.

Action resumes at 9 a.m. with girls action and boys consolations. The finals are slated to begin around 4 p.m.

PIAA champions Landon Sidun of Norwin and Elijah Brown of Belle Vernon, both Penn State recruits, coasted in the finals with pins.

Sidun decked Greensburg Salem sophomore Shane Lehnhardt in 16 seconds and Belle Vernon sophomore Enzo Ortolona in 43 seconds. He will face off against Franklin Regional’s Titus Colangelo.

On the other side of the bracket, Hempfield senior Nico Kapusta, the fifth Kapusta to wrestle in the county tournament, tangles with Penn-Trafford senior Dylan Barrett.

“The season has gone well, and I am feeling really confident right now,” Kapusta said. “At this point of the season, this is where I need to be. I am firing on all cylinders.

“There is still a little bit of work to do. Right now I feel great.”

Brown pinned Latrobe junior Maxx Hauser in 44 seconds and Greensburg Salem sophomore Deacon Grant in 33 seconds.

He will face Ligonier Valley junior Jake Mundorff in the semifinals. A win could put him in the finals against PIAA runner-up Cooper Roscosky.

The Knights hold a four-point lead on Penn-Trafford in a tight team race.

The Knights have 108.5 points and eight in the semifinals. Penn-Trafford has 104.5 and seven still alive for a gold medal.

Burrell is third at 95.5, Franklin Regional follows with 94, Kiski Area has 91.5 and Derry 88. All four teams have six in the semifinals.

Burrell senior Cam Baker and Derry junior Mason Horwat will be looking to become three-time champions.
