The Fox Chapel hockey team returned from the three-week break over the holidays with a difficult PIHL Class 3A battle with Peters Township. The Foxes weren’t able to find enough offense to support a strong performance from goaltender Charlie Hill.
Hill made 33 saves, but Fox Chapel lost 1-0. The Foxes only finished with six shots on goal. Chay Lamagna scored the Indians’ lone goal in the second period.
Fox Chapel won two of its last three games before the break.
Swimmers split
The Fox Chapel swim teams aplit with Mt. Lebanon on Jan. 5. Fox Chapel’s girls won 103-69, while the boys fell 104-79.
The girls team is 5-1, while the boys are 2-4. Delaney O’Toole and Ellie Lange have set records this season. O’Toole set a Norwin pool record in the 100 back. She also set a new Fox Chapel team and pool record in the 100 free.
Lange set a new 500 free pool record.
Bulldogs building
The Shady Side Academy boys basketball team got off to a fresh start to 2026 by beating Apollo-Ridge in its first section game since the calendar turned. The Bulldogs picked up the section win behind a balanced scoring effort.
Paul Benec led the way with 15 points while Willis Price-Wheeler and B.J. Mallory provided 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Bulldogs, who lost seven straight after beating West Mifflin in their season opener, have won back-to-back games for the first time this season.
Close losses for FC
The Fox Chapel boys basketball team knew returning to the playoffs out of Section 1-6A was going to be difficult and involve winning a lot of close games. The Foxes were tripped up in the first two games of the new year, losing 60-57 in a nonsection battle with Peters Township in overtime and 63-57 to North Hills.
Fox Chapel (7-5, 2-3) has already played two overtime games this season, losing to North Allegheny and Peters Township.
A win for Abdelsalam
Seton Hill freshman Youssef Abdelsalam picked up an 8-2 decision win during a dual meet against Kentucky Wesleyan to help the Griffins sweep the Thomas More (Ky.) Tri-Match. Abdelsalam, a Fox Chapel graduate, beat Kentucky Wesleyan’s Juan Quintana in a 141-pound bout.
Abdelsalam was 28-12 during his senior year with the Foxes and finished with a 72-56 record in high school.
