McDowell’s balanced offensive attack and 24-point third quarter overwhelmed Montour on Saturday, as the Trojans surged to a 76-41 victory at the Montour Athletic Center.

The Trojans had three players with double figures, with Liam Marsh spearheading the offense with 18 points and three 3-pointers.

Robbie Kwiatek delivered 16 points, knocking down four 3-pointers, and Leo Finazzo scored 11.

McDowell (9-3) knocked down 11 threes in all.

“That’s how we go,” Marsh said. “Our whole entire program is just going to get it up. We’re not that big, so that’s how we have to score. Just get up and transition, and let them fly.”

The Trojans dictated the pace and played an up-tempo style with a ton of ball movement. McDowell finished with 23 team assists.

“Passing the ball is just how we get the open looks,” Marsh said. “It’s how we make all the 3s.”

McDowell’s Zane Simons contributed seven points, six rebounds and four assists.

Montour coach Bill Minear said McDowell is a great team that reminded him a lot of Chartiers Valley.

“I think they’re just a veteran team, and we’re a young team, and I think that means a lot,” Minear said. “We have guys inexperienced at the guard spot and they have trouble controlling the tempo, whereas their guards control the tempo really well.”

Mark Carter had 16 points to lead Montour (4-9).

“We had a tough loss in a close game last night (against Thomas Jefferson),” Minear said. “I think we were looking ahead to the section games too, because we have two big ones coming up. That could be it too, but it was not a good performance.”

McDowell knocked down four 3s to go up 17-10 after one.

Montour, however made some changes. Down 22-12, the Spartans, led by Carter and key blocks from Loic Kalau, sparked a 7-2 run to cut it to 24-19. The Trojans, however, ended the quarter on a 7-3 run to go into halftime up 31-22.

McDowell kept the momentum and went on a 22-4 run to start the third quarter to go up 51-26 and take control.

“We just wanted to see how our guys react,” Minear said. “I kind of knew, but I didn’t realize we’d be as flat as we were.”

The Spartans will now turn their attention back to conference play. They host Moon (9-2) on Tuesday.

The Trojans will return to District 10 play, happy with a quality nonsection victory at Montour.

“This gym is awesome,” Marsh said. “I love these hoops, man. I’m pretty sure my teammates did too. Just a great facility.”
