WPIAL boys basketball concludes the first half of section play with plenty of great rivalry matchups set for Tuesday.

One rivalry that will carry over from the football field to the basketball court will determine sole possession of first place in Section 1-2A.

After meeting twice on the gridiron this past fall, Clairton will visit Jeannette in the first of two regular season games on the hardwood in a battle of teams with a combined overall record of 19-1.

Following WPIAL and PIAA championships in football, the Bears are off to a perfect 8-0 start with six of those wins coming against section opponents.

The Jayhawks are also 6-0 in the section and 11-1 this year. The 2025 WPIAL Class 2A boys basketball champions have won nine straight games since their only loss of the season to Woodford County out of Kentucky in early December.

Clairton and Jeannette are 1-2 in scoring and points allowed in the section.

Clairton is averaging 69.2 points per game and allowing only 39.7 points per game, while Jeannette has averaged 69.1 points per game and allowed 40.4.

Both teams have cruised past their section opponents, with the closest section win for the Jayhawks being 29 points against Riverview and the Bears’ closest section win coming in a 18-point triumph over Bentworth.

Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Another 2A showdown

The Clairton at Jeannette showdown isn’t the only Class 2A contest pitting two 6-0 teams in section play against each other for first place at the midway point.

In Section 3-2A, Jefferson-Morgan hosts Chartiers-Houston in a clash for first place between teams who are a combined 23-3 this season.

The Rockets are a perfect 12-0 this season, including a 6-0 record in section play.

The Buccaneers are 6-0 in the section and 11-3 overall. They had a 10-game winning streak snapped in a nonsection loss Saturday at Washington.

Their numbers on offense are identical, with Jefferson-Morgan averaging 56.5 points per game and Chartiers-Houston at 54.5 points per contest.

However, while the Bucs have only yielded 40.6 points per game this season, the Rockets have allowed just over 31 points per game defensively.

Testing for an A-plus on midterms

There are two more games with first place or at least a share of the top spot up for grabs in district boys hoops head-to-head battles.

In Section 2-4A, Quaker Valley looks to stay alone on top of the section when it hosts second-place Central Valley at 7:30 p.m.

The Quakers are 4-0 in the section and 9-3 overall three straight wins after starting the season 5-0.

The Warriors are 3-1 in section play and 10-2 this season. CV had won 10 of its first 11 games before losing at home to Hopewell on Friday for its first section defeat.

In Section 1-A, Aquinas Academy, Nazareth Prep and Avella are tied for first place.

The Crusaders and Saints are 3-1 in the section while the Eagles are 2-1.

On Tuesday, Aquinas Academy (5-7) visits Nazareth Prep (3-8) at 7 p.m. to conclude the first half for those two teams.

Avella wraps up their first half with back-to-back section games late in the week, visiting Summit Academy on Thursday and hosting Beaver County Christian on Friday.
