PNC said today that all employees will return to the office five days a week starting May 4.

In a memo sent Wednesday morning, Chairman and CEO Bill Demchak said PNC has “always been an in-office company.

“It’s not just how we operate — it’s part of our culture,” he wrote. “We are a relationship-driven organization, and our strength lies in the connections we build with each other, our clients and our communities. Being in the office fuels collaboration, sparks innovation and helps us grow — individually and collectively.”

PNC shifted away to remote and hybrid work during the covid-19 pandemic.

“That decision reflected our values and how we show up for each other in challenging times,” he said. “Today, our world has changed, and so has PNC. As we look ahead, it’s time to return to the way we work best: together, in person.”

PNC’s Realty Services team has been working to secure space and assign seats, where possible, Demchak said. He said employees would receive confirmation of their new or existing space later Wednesday morning following the memo.

”I understand this transition may require adjustments for some of you,” he said. “That’s why we’re providing advance notice — to give you adequate time to plan and prepare.”

While PNC does not disclose local employment figures, the Pittsburgh Business Times reported in October that the company has 11,240 employees locally, out of 55,180 total.

PNC has a significant presence in Downtown Pittsburgh, anchored in the Tower at PNC Plaza, a 33-story building that opened in 2015 and is known as one of the most energy-efficient skyscrapers in the United States. The company operates in three other tall buildings — One PNC Plaza, Two PNC Plaza, Three PNC Plaza — and also has the PNC Firstside Center for back-office functions.
