An overtime loss to Pine-Richland during the Peter Sauer Memorial Tournament had the Shady Side Academy girls basketball team on the war path. The Bulldogs bounced back from their second defeat of the season with three consecutive victories where they produced 60 or more points.
In Shady Side Academy’s most recent win, the Bulldogs throttled East Allegheny, 73-16. Cassie Sauer scored a team-high 18 points to help Shady Side Academy (12-2, 7-0) beat the Wildcats comfortably.
The Bulldogs built momentum for that contest by getting revenge for their loss in the WPIAL Class 3A title game last season by knocking off section rival Greensburg Central Catholic, 66-59.
Karis Thomas led the Bulldogs with 28 points in the win over GCC.
Shady Side Academy also defeated Deer Lakes, 63-26, in the aftermath of the Pine-Richland loss.
Foxes fall on senior night
Fox Chapel wrestling had a four-match winning streak halted by Indiana on Jan. 14. The Foxes lost their first four matches in a 44-25 defeat.
Daniel Noel (133 pounds) and Clay Kimbrough (160) picked up pins for the Foxes. Andrew Kratsa (145) also won via major decision for Fox Chapel, while Joey Geller picked up a decision win. Adam Haines (152) won by forfeit.
Fox Chapel swimming wins
The Fox Chapel girls swim team has found plenty of success during its dual swim meet season. Fox Chapel swept a tri-meet with Baldwin and Shaler on Jan. 12. The girls team has won five straight meets since a loss to North Allegheny.
Matthews places 4th
Niayana Matthews reached the semifinals of the 190-pound bracket at the Blue Devils Winter Classic girls wrestling tournament before placing fourth. Matthews, who lost to Connellsville’s Ravyn Cameron-Botti, improved to 5-7 on the season by going 2-2 at the event.
Momentum halted
The Shady Side Academy boys basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to a close in a close, 46-40 loss to Seton LaSalle. The Bulldogs (5-8, 2-3) will have a three-game break from section play before the postseason chase begins again in Section 3-3A.
Cam Mallory led Shady Side Academy with 12 points in the loss. The Bulldogs were one game back of third place.
Worsen helps at AMCC Duals
Fox Chapel graduate Michael Worsen collected three wins at the AMCC Duals last weekend as Pitt Bradford went 1-2 as a team. The Panthers lost to Penn College, 37-13, and Alfred State, 34-22.
Pitt Bradford beat Penn State Altoona, 53-0. Worsen, a freshman, competes at 133 pounds and is 16-8 with 11 pins.
