The Pittsburgh Steelers coaching search is adding a candidate with Steel City roots.

Greenfield native Mike McCarthy, a Super Bowl champion with the Green Bay Packers, will interview with the Steelers, according to reports by NFL Network and ESPN.

McCarthy, 62, is the oldest and most experienced of the head coaching candidates the team has sought to interview. The former NFL head coach split 18 seasons between the Packers and Dallas Cowboys, most recently in 2024.

His career record is 174-112-2.

McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers led the Packers to a Super Bowl win over the Steelers in 2010. Replaced by Green Bay after going 4-7-1 in 2018, McCarthy later joined the Cowboys and went 49-35 in five seasons. He posted three 12-win seasons in Dallas before going 7-10 in his final year.

His hometown ties include a stint on Pitt’s coaching staff, first as a graduate assistant and later as wide receivers coach before jumping to the NFL. A former offensive coordinator in New Orleans and San Francisco, McCarthy and Steelers general manager Omar Khan spent time together with the Saints.

McCarthy is the ninth candidate that the Steelers have asked to interview.

Among the nine, only McCarthy and Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores have previous experience as an NFL head coach. Flores led the Miami Dolphins from 2019-21.

The other known candidates are Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula and pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak and Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.

The Steelers are seeking to replace coach Mike Tomlin, who resigned after 19 seasons.
