Cubcake fundraiser set

Bakers are being sought to contribute cupcakes to the Norwin Lions Club’s 11th annual Cubcake Wars fundraiser from noon to 3 p.m. March 1 at the Norwin High School cafeteria, 251 McMahon Drive.

The proceeds from the cupcake sale go to the charities supported by the Norwin Lions and the service organization’s Kitty Sack program, which provides food for Norwin elementary students to combat food insecurity.

In addition to the cupcake sale, there will be a gift basket auction.

Irwin gets money for stream bank project

A state grant from the Commonwealth Financing Authority will fund a stream bank restoration project along Tinker’s Run in Irwin.

The funds will be used to stabilize the bank and prevent further erosion affecting the public works department parking lot at the bottom of First Street.

Community development director hired

North Huntingdon has a new community development director.

The township commissioners on Jan. 21 hired Thomas Bonidie to serve in the post, replacing Joshua Andrykovitch, who resigned last year.

Bonidie will receive a salary of $88,000.

North Huntingdon will seek summer help

North Huntingdon plans to advertise for summer help for the township’s parks and recreation department.

The township commissioners on Jan. 21 approved advertising for the summer workers, who primarily will serve as camp counselors at the parks, said Harry Faulk, township manager.

North Huntingdon pays the seasonal workers $15 an hour.

America250PA offering scholarships

To mark America’s 250th anniversary and to honor the legacy of Pennsylvania’s strong commitment to education, America250PA will award $250,000 in scholarships — 25 scholarships worth $10,000 each — to Pennsylvania high school seniors who plan to attend an accredited Pennsylvania college or university in the 2026-27 school year.

The Semiquincentennial Scholarship Program will distribute the scholarships across America250PA’s six regions.

There will be up to 12 awards for community college students and up to 13 awards for students attending four-year institutions.

Applications are due Jan. 31.

Heating assistance program enrollment

The federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, has opened enrollment for the season, offering one-time cash grants to qualifying applicants to help with home heating bills or emergency repairs.

Households can apply through April 10 or until the funds are depleted.

Journalism scholarship

The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania is accepting applications for its 20th annual Bob Fryer Memorial Scholarship ($5,000) and the club’s annual $2,500 scholarship for aspiring journalists.

Deadline for entries is Feb. 9. Winners will be awarded at the club’s annual Golden Quills Awards Dinner.

AARP seeking tax-prep aides

The AARP Foundation is seeking volunteers to be trained for its tax aide program, the nation’s largest free volunteer-based tax preparation program.
